Fort Myers, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team (4-1, 1-0 Atlantic Sun) picked up its fourth consecutive victory in a 4-3 road win over Florida Gulf Coast (1-3, 0-1 A-Sun) in the league opener for both teams Sunday afternoon. Three Hatters earned singles and doubles victories with senior Valentina Galbarini (Montevideo, Uruguay) earning the clinching singles point.
60th-ranked Galbarini and freshman Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) led a clean Hatter sweep of the three doubles matches with an 8-6 win over Katherine Evans and Jessica Sweeting at #1 doubles.
Stetson quickly extended its lead to 3-0 as junior Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) and sophomore Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) earned quick straight-set sweeps at #2 and #5 singles, respectively. Purushotham, the current A-Sun Player of the Week, dispatched Bibiana Almeida 6-0, 6-1 while Gunning sunk Evans 6-3, 6-1. FGCU cut the Stetson lead to 3-1 before Galbarini salted the match away with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Iris Rendon at the top of the lineup.
