DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team (8-3) cruised to a 7-0 win over visiting Eastern Kentucky (5-10) on Wednesday at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. Four Hatters were double winners for Stetson, which improved to 6-2 at home on the year.
Stetson grabbed the doubles point as the tandem of sophomore Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) and junior Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) improved to 9-0 on the season with an 8-2 win over Jessica Albuquerque and Esmira Gheisary at the #2 spot. Nationally 37th-ranked senior Valentina Galbarini (Montevideo, Uruguay) and freshman Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) defeated Anouk Faure and Anais Hamel 8-4 at the top of the lineup.
The Hatters won five of the six singles matches in straight sets with de los Santos posting a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over Albuquerque at the #1 slot. Senior Katherine Nowicki (Jacksonville, Fla.) cruised past Gheisary 6-1, 6-0 at #5 singles. In the only match to go to a third-set tiebreaker, senior Jackie Faulk (Fort Myers, Fla.) won 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 over Catarina Branco at #6 singles.
Stetson is back in action Saturday at 2 p.m. in a 2009 A-Sun Tournament Finals re-match against ETSU at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatters and Bucs face off in men's tennis at 10 a.m. prior to the women's match. Live Stats are available at www.GoHatters.com.
