DeLand, Fla. - Stetson's Fredrik Brustad and Jonathan Mendoza have been voted to the 2010 Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference Team and the Hatters were selected to finish first, as well as win the conference tournament in the preseason coaches' poll. Stetson received six first place votes, four more than second place Campbell University.
Brustad, a junior out of Oslo, Norway was one of three players to be voted unanimously to the team. In 2009 he earned second team all-conference honors after tying for 3rd place in the A-Sun in goals with seven, and tying for 4th in scoring with 18 points. This summer Brustad played in the Premier Development League of the USL and was one of three first-year players nominated for Rookie of the Year honors. On the season he tallied 10 points (two goals and six assists) in 14 games for the Central Florida Kraze.
A sophomore from Altamonte Springs, Florida, Mendoza was also selected to the 2010 Preseason All-Conference Team. Following the 2009 season he was voted to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team after an outstanding rookie campaign. He scored three goals and added three assists for nine points. All three of his goals were game-winning tallies which tied him for first place in the conference in that category. Mendoza also played for the Premier Development League's Central Florida Kraze this summer. He played in 13 games scoring four goals and picking up two assists for 10 points. he was named to the PDL's All-Southern Conference Team.
Stetson will play exhibition games against Embry-Riddle (8/21), Rollins College (8/25) and Florida Tech (8/27) before opening the regular season at home against Johnson & Wales on September 1 at 7:00 p.m. The complete schedule can be found at www.gohatters.com.
