Hatters Fall to Hurricanes on Jimmy Buffett Day

DeLand, Fla. - The Miami Hurricanes blew into DeLand Sunday and left with a 6-0 win over the Stetson women's soccer team. The Hatters (1-1-0) started well controlling most of the action in the first 15 minutes of play, yet eventually fell prey to the elements as well as a quality opponent.

The weather went from hot and humid, to a light rain, to a solid downpour, and back to clear skies and brutal humidity in the second half. In the end it was lightning strikes in the area that ended the game with 2:16 remaining on the clock.

Miami (1-1-0) was able to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when freshman Blake Stockton (Linwood, NJ) made a run down the right side and delivered a cross to senior Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, NJ) who tucked a right footer into the lower left corner.

After regrouping at halftime Stetson came out looking to even up the score, but a goal by Lauren Singer (Mt. Sinai, NY) five minutes in deflated the home team's spirits. After a deflection Singer found herself behind Stetson goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia (Webster Groves, Mo.) who had no chance on the play.

Miami added four more goals in the final 33 minutes as both teams used the opportunity to make substitutions and get some early-season playing time for their benches. Twenty-one Hatters saw time on the field.

Senior Tessa Gavilsky led the Hatters with two shots on goal, followed by freshman Alyssa Welsh (Edison, NJ) with one.  Overall Miami outshot Stetson 27-5 and the teams were even with two corner kicks apiece. Garavaglia finished with four saves for the Hatters.

Stetson is now 1-8-0 all-time against Miami with the first game being played in 1998.

Next up Stetson will host Embry-Riddle on Thursday, August 26 at 7:00 p.m. Last season the Hatters defeated the Eagles 7-0 in DeLand.
