DeLand, Fla. - Stetson (2-2-1) suffered a disappointing loss in Sunday's Stetson Soccer Classic championship game when Florida International (4-2-0) broke a scoreless tie with a golden goal in the final two minutes of the second overtime period.
Tournament MVP Nicolas Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) picked up a through pass from Diego Tamburus and flipped a shot up and over Stetson goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl (Blaichach, Germany) from 25 yards out on the left side in the 109th minute. Rodriguez also tallied the winning goal in FIU's 2-1 win over JU Friday night in the tournament's opening game.
Although the Hatters outshot the Golden Panthers 10-6 in the second half, they were on the short end of a 19-14 total for the game. Stetson had eight corner kicks to five for FIU.
Fredrik Brustad (Oslo, Norway), Joakim Helland (Bergen, Norway), and Giulio D'Amore (DeLand, Fla.) each has two shots for Stetson. Ryan Corning (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and Gonzalo de Mujica (Buenos Aires, Argentina) represented the home team on the all-tournament team.
"We played hard and we controlled the tempo for much of the game but we did not play smart in the last three minutes and it cost us the game", said Stetson head coach T. Logan Fleck.
In the day's first game Jacksonville defeated Manhattan College 5-1 and thus secured a second place finish in the Classic.
Stetson will remain home to host Florida Atlantic on Saturday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m.
