Kait Jones Hat Trick Leads Hatters Over Spartans

DeLand, Fla. - Sophomore forward Kait Jones (DeLand, Fla.) became the first Stetson women's soccer player to record a hat trick since Heather Berg's school record four goal-game October 25, 2009 as the Hatters (3-10-2, 2-4-1 Atlantic Sun) cruised to a 6-3 win over visiting USC Upstate (2-14-1, 0-7-0 A-Sun) on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at the Stetson Soccer Complex.

Jones scored her goals in the 42nd, 45th and 55th minutes to turn a 1-1 tie into a 4-1 Stetson lead. Her first score was a three-yard punch off a cross from freshman Morgan Campbell (Oviedo, Fla.), her second goal came off a give-and-go from sophomore forward Sammie Matthews (Palmetto, Fla.) and her hat trick clincher was a result of a run up the left side and cross from freshman forward Katie O'Kennedy (Oviedo, Fla.). Those three goals were the first three of the season for Jones.

Michelle Calmeyn, who finished with two of USC Upstate's three goals, opened the scoring with a 17th minute penalty kick goal that was answered very quickly by sophomore forward Alyssa Welsh's (Edison, N.J.) unassisted 20th minute tally. That goal set the stage for the Jones fireworks, but more was yet to come.

Senior midfielder Samantha Snyder (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) scored her first goal (assisted by Welsh) of the season in her final career home match to make it 5-1 Hatters in the 58th minute, but the Spartans refused to go quietly. Melissa Pereira in the 75th minute and Calmeyn in the 80th minute combined to cut the lead to 5-3 with 10 minutes left. Finally, O'Kennedy struck the killing blow in the 86th minute as she finished off a long cross from freshman midfielder Alex Stanojev (Gainesville, Fla.).

The Hatters outshot the Spartans 33-10 and took six corner kicks to USC Upstate's 1. Senior goalkeeper Grace Turner (Fort Myers, Fla.) did not record a single save on the day while Spartans keeper Sarah Plantz made 12 stops against the Stetson barrage.

Stetson concludes the regular season next weekend at Belmont and Lipscomb as it tries to claw its way into the A-Sun tournament for the ninth consecutive season. Friday's match at Belmont starts at 6:00 pm while Sunday is a 2:00 pm start at Lipscomb (all times Eastern).
