DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team (1-0) rolled to a 6-1 win over visiting Florida A&M (0-3) in its dual match opener Saturday at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center, getting singles and doubles wins from three different players in the process. Freshmen Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) and Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas) won in their first competitive action at home.
A pair of 8-0 shutouts on Courts 1 (Unnati Purushotham and Carolina de los Santos) and 2 (Sullivan and MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell) quickly put the Hatters ahead 1-0 heading into singles play, where Stetson made short work of the Rattlers. De los Santos, Purushotham, Sullivan, Cable and sophomore Jen Miller (Tampa, Fla.) all won their matches in straight sets. Only a third set tiebreaker win by FAMU's Kathline Durden on Court 3 over Stauffer-MacDowell prevented a shutout.
Stetson hosts Florida Atlantic at 11 a.m. Sunday; Live Stats will be available at GoHatters.com. Following the match, the Hatters will take part in a halftime ceremony at the Edmunds Center during the Stetson-ETSU men's basketball game to honor Valentina Galbarini '10 and de los Santos, the ground-breaking Stetson doubles duo that reached the round of 16 in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
