DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team (2-0) completed a sweep of its dual season-opening two-match homestand on Sunday with a 7-0 win over visiting Florida Atlantic (1-3) at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. Four Hatters were winners in singles and doubles on the day.
Due to the threat of rain, the singles competition took place first rather than the usual doubles matches. The Hatters rolled through all six matches, getting straight-set victories from senior Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) plus freshmen MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell (Asheville, N.C.), Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas) and Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.). Sophomore Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) and junior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) were pushed to third sets but both outlasted their Owl foes.
The de los Santos/Purushotham and Stauffer-MacDowell/Sullivan doubles combos wrapped up the shutout for the Hatters with 8-3 and 8-5 wins on Courts 1 and 2, respectively. Following the match, the Hatters were honored at the Edmunds Center during halftime of the 55-54 men's basketball victory over ETSU, specifically the 2010 NCAA Round of 16 doubles combination of de los Santos and Valentina Galbarini '10.
Stetson heads to Troy, Ala. next weekend to face the host Troy Trojans on Friday afternoon; the Hatters stay in town to battle Charleston Southern at 10 a.m. Saturday.
