Statesboro, Ga. - Four Hatters were double winners on the day as the Stetson women's tennis team (10-1) began a three-match swing through the Peach State with a 5-2 win at Georgia Southern on Thursday. Junior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) earned the match-clinching singles point and also teamed with freshman Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) to clinch the doubles point.
Stetson won all three doubles matches with Cable and Gunning clinching the 1-0 lead with an 8-4 win on Court 3 over Natalie Maffett and Melanie Rolle. Also winning for the Hatters in doubles were the Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay)/Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) (Court 1) and MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell (Asheville, N.C.)/Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas) duos (Court 2).
Cable would quickly make it 2-0 Stetson with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Allison Beeler on Court 6 with de los Santos dispatching Paola Garrido 6-2, 6-3 at the top of the lineup for the third point. Gunning then finished off the Eagles by beating Rolle 6-1, 6-2 on Court 3. Sullivan picked up Stetson's last point on an injury retirement.
The Hatters play their first two A-Sun road matches of the year this weekend as they visit Mercer at 2 p.m. Friday and Kennesaw State at 2 p.m. Saturday. These matches will be doubleheaders with the Stetson men, who will start at 10 a.m. both days against the same foes.
