Campbell Hands Hatters First Defeat

Women's Tennis Stetson University

Hatters Knocked Out of A-Sun Tourney by ETSU

DeLand, Fla. - The fourth-seeded Stetson women's tennis team (17-6) saw its season come to an end on Friday morning with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded Atlantic Sun Conference regular season champion ETSU in the semifinals of the A-Sun tournament at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.  Stetson's 17 wins in 2011 are just one shy of the Division I-era program record it tied in 2010; the Hatters have won 35 matches the last two seasons and are slated to return seven of their eight rostered players in 2011-12.

Freshman Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) and junior Shannon Gunning got the match started on the right foot for Stetson with an 8-4 doubles win on Court 3 over Tara Sheets and Andra Voinea, but the Lady Bucs would take the other two matches and the doubles point.

ETSU won three out of four singles matches to put the match to bed as Marlene Wieliczko, Diana Navrostska and Karina Kedzo pulled off victories on Courts 3, 5 and 4 respectively.  Sophomore Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) picked up a 6-2, 6-4 Court 1 win over Kelly Holtzhausen but seconds later the fourth point was achieved by the Lady Bucs and the match stopped due to time constraints.

Stetson returns five of its program record six All-Atlantic Sun honorees as the future remains bright for Head Coach Sasha Schmid's squad.
