Campbell's First Goal Not Enough in Loss to JU

DeLand, Fla. - Freshman midfielder Morgan Campbell (Oviedo, Fla.) scored her first career goal, but it wasn't enough for the Stetson women's soccer team (1-7-1, 0-1-0 Atlantic Sun) in a 3-1 loss to visiting Jacksonville (5-4-1, 1-0-0 A-Sun) in the A-Sun opener for both squads Friday night at the Stetson Soccer Complex.

Friday night's match was a marathon slog through a 75-minute lightning delay prior to kickoff and then another 30-minute lightning delay late in the first half.

Campbell's goal gave Stetson a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. Sophomore forward Alyssa Welsh (Edison, N.J.) began the play with a cross from the right wing into the box that was expertly backheeled by senior midfielder Alexis Hermosa (Orlando, Fla.) to the foot of Campbell, who easily rolled it past JU goalkeeper Sarah Sierra. That goal snapped a scoreless streak for the Hatters that dated back to the first half of the September 9 match vs. Chattanooga (290 minutes, eight seconds).

That lead would not hold up, however, as Liz Fink wheeled and rifled a one-timer past Stetson senior goalkeeper Grace Turner (Fort Myers, Fla.) in the 35th minute to draw the Dolphins level. Becca Massip assisted on that goal as the two teams went into the lightning break and halftime tied 1-1.

Kaitlyn Bassett scored twice early in the second half (59th minute and 64th minute) to vault Jacksonville to the victory. Adriana Rodrigues assisted on the game-winning goal while Jessica Cataldo-Ramirez and Eva Leeper recorded helpers on the insurance tally shortly thereafter.

Turner made six saves for the Hatters while Sierra only had to make one for the Dolphins. Jacksonville out-shot Stetson 18-10 on the night and won the corner kick battle 10-3.

The Hatters continue A-Sun action at 3:00 pm Sunday as they host North Florida. Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at GoHatters.com, the official online home of Stetson Athletics.
