Estero, Fla. - Host FGCU (2-3) handed the visiting Stetson sand volleyball team (4-6) a narrow 3-2 setback Friday afternoon at Estero Community Park. Freshman Julie Bassett (Wadsworth, Ohio) and sophomore Kaley Melville (New Germany, Minn.) earned a three-set win for the Hatters at the #1 seed position.
Bassett and Melville defeated Kaitlin Holm and Holly Youngquist 17-21, 21-13, 15-10 in a hard-fought three-set battle, rallying from a set down to do so. Stetson's other point in the match came as a result of an injury forfeit at the #2 slot. A close battle at the #5 seed line that went the way of the Eagles turned the match outcome in the home team's favor.
Stetson will be back in action Friday, April 6 when it hosts Florida State and Florida Atlantic in a tri-match. The Hatters will face the Seminoles at 10:00 am and the Owls at 2:00 pm while FSU plays FAU in between at 12:00 pm.
