Belmont Sweeps Hatters

Nashville, Tenn. - Host Belmont (8-24, 3-3 Atlantic Sun) handed the visiting Stetson softball team (17-14, 2-4 A-Sun) a pair of crushing conference defeats Friday afternoon at Rose Park. The Bruins used a fourth inning grand slam to win 6-2 in Game 1 and scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to stun the Hatters 2-1 in the nightcap.

Junior right fielder Chelsea Whalley (Calgary, Alta.) hit her first home run of the season in the opener to tie the game 1-1 in the second, but a Mia Vierra grand slam that was immediately followed by a Courtney Elrod solo shot in the bottom of the fourth put the Bruins ahead for good.

Stetson out-hit Belmont 10-6 in the second game but stranded eight baserunners and could only push across one run on an RBI single by senior first baseman Carolyn Boyd (Germantown, Tenn.). A throwing error in the bottom of the seventh allowed the tying run to score; one batter later it was a Vierra walk-off RBI single that gave Belmont its first doubleheader sweep of Stetson in either program's history.

The Hatters visit Lipscomb at 4:00 pm ET (3:00 pm local CT) tomorrow to conclude their A-Sun swing through the Music City.
