TROY, Ala. -
Even though the Stetson women's soccer team (1-4-0) had a number of chances to
tie the contest late in regulation, the Hatters fell to Troy (4-2-0) by a score of 1-0 on an early
penalty kick on the final day of the Trojan Classic on Sunday.
It was an early penalty kick that gave Troy the 1-0 advantage it held until the
final buzzer. After a hand ball on
Stetson in the box gave the Trojans the opportunity in the eighth minute of
play, Chelsey Williams took advantage of the penalty by putting the ball in the
back of the net and giving Troy
the early lead.
Junior goalkeeper Laura Seletos made five saves in the
defeat, with a number of difficult stops helping to keep the Hatters in the
match. The veteran also made a
tremendous play on a second penalty awarded to the Trojans. Seletos made a diving save to her left,
preventing Troy
from taking a 2-0 lead in the 22nd minute of the match.
With about 15 minutes to play in the second half, a Troy forward received the
ball behind the entire Stetson defense and found herself one-on-one with
Seletos. The junior forced the Trojan
wide of the goal with an aggressive move and a tip on the ball, and Troy came away with another
missed opportunity to put the game away.
With three of the team's eight second half shots coming in
the final eight minutes of action, Stetson never quit in this one. The Hatters' best chance at evening the score
late came with about six minutes remaining when junior Amber Grose played a
ball into the box, finding the head of an open Kait Jones. The junior forward headed the ball towards
the goal, but played it just wide, and the Hatters remained behind on the
scoreboard.
The Hatters finished the game with a 14-13 advantage in
shots, while both teams put six of their opportunities on target. The Trojans recorded three corner kicks to
Stetson's one. Seletos finished with
fives saves, and Troy's
Katie Comeno-Lewis and Maddie Winter combined for six in the win.
"We're starting to have a team identity," Head Coach Julie
Orlowski said following the game. "We
did a lot of things a lot better today. We're very pleased with how we played,
but obviously we're not pleased with the result."
Stetson will next return home for a non-conference contest
against Florida Atlantic. The Hatters
and the Owls are scheduled to kickoff at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8 at
the brand new Athletic
Training Center.
Update: Amber Grose and Alyssa Welsh were named to the Trojan Classic All-Tournament Team following the last match of the weekend.
