MACON, Ga. - Senior
Joel Naburgs played the best game of his four-year career on his 23rd
birthday this past Friday. On Tuesday he
was rewarded for it by being named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week for
the first time in his career, as announced by the league.
Naburgs scored a career high 27 points on a career best six
three-pointers, while leading the Stetson men's basketball team to a crucial
80-71 victory over second place Florida Gulf Coast on Feb. 22 to keep the
Hatters in third place in the conference standings. The senior added seven rebounds, six assists,
and turned the ball over just once.
The guard's fourth three-pointer of the game, which came
just moments into the second half, made Naburgs the all-time leader in threes
made at Stetson University. His now 173
career triples past former Hatter star Kerry Blackshear, who totaled 170 treys
at Stetson from 1992-96.
Naburgs is the third Hatter to be named A-Sun Player of the Week this season. Junior Chris Perez earned the accolades on Jan. 8 after wins over Kennesaw State and Jacksonville, while senior Adam Pegg was named Player of the Week just last Tuesday after leading the Hatters to road wins at Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky.
Also named College Sports Madness A-Sun Player of the Week on Monday, Naburgs is averaging 9.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.0
assists in a solid senior campaign. He
and the rest of the Hatters have just two regular season games remaining before
Stetson heads to Macon for the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. The team has not been to the A-Sun
Championships since the year before Naburgs arrived on campus.
The Hatters host Kennesaw State on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7:15
p.m., and then welcome first place Mercer to the Edmunds Center on Saturday,
March 2 at 3:15 p.m. Both games will be
available on HatterVision, ASun.TV, and the Hatters Radio Network.
