The Stetson women's tennis team (7-4, 2-0) earned its third
straight sweep on Saturday afternoon, defeating Lipscomb (4-8, 0-2) by a score
of 7-0 to improve to 2-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play, and 7-4 overall.
Lipscomb opened things up on a high note, taking the number
one doubles match 8-4. Junior Lindsey
Cable and freshman Eveline Lepinay then evened things up at 1-1, winning at
number three doubles, 8-4. Junior Diana
Bukajeva and senior Jen Miller then gave the Hatters a 1-0 lead by defeating
Lipscomb's second doubles pair, 8-5, to secure the point.
The top of the Stetson singles lineup made quick work of the
Bisons, as number two senior Sara Lazarevic won 6-1, 6-2, before number one freshman
Andrea Crespo earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory to make it 3-0 Stetson early on.
With the number three, four, and five singles players set to
win at nearly the same time, it was Bukajeva who earned the clinching victory,
defeating Lorena Djuknic 6-4, 6-0 to remain undefeated in singles play this
season, at 10-0.
Miller quickly followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the number
five position, before Cable followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 victory of her own at
number four. Lepinay, who lost her first
set 6-4, but came back strong with a 6-0 win in set two, completed the sweep
for Stetson with a 6-1 victory in the third set.
"The ladies played very well today, especially in singles,"
Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said following the match. "I am seeing a lot of improvements from each
of the players since we came back from California."
The Hatters will now prepare for a non-conference match
against Harvard on Tuesday, March 19.
The Crimson, who were ranked nationally earlier this season, will square
off with Stetson at 2:30 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
"We will take a
well-deserved day off tomorrow and prepare for Monday's match against an
excellent Harvard team," Pilote said.
