The Stetson women's tennis team (3-2) dropped a tough match
on Saturday, falling to 72nd ranked College of Charleston (5-3) by a score of
4-3 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
The match began with College of Charleston taking the
doubles point. Freshman Andrea Crespo and Junior Diana Bukajeva lost to Irene
Viana and Katherine Schofield 8-3. The Cougars captured the point when Jenny
Falcone and Samantha Maddox defeated Senior Sara Lazarevic and Sophomore Rachel
Luke 8-3.
Junior Lindsey Cable and Freshman Eveline Lepinay remained
undefeated in doubles by defeating Christin Newman and Brooke McAmis 8-3.
In singles, Maddox defeated Clarke Tatje 6-3, 6-2 to give
the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the match. At the number five singles position,
Lepinay got the Hatters on the board by defeating Olivia McMillan 7-6 (6), 6-4.
College of Charleston extended its match lead when Schofield
defeated Cable 6-3, 6-2. The Cougars secured the victory when Newman defeated
Crespo 6-1, 7-5. Senior Jen Miller gave the Hatters another point, defeating
Irene Viana 6-4, 6-1. Bukajeva was the last to finish, defeating McAmis 6-4,
2-6, 1-0 (9).
"Despite playing in extremely challenging weather conditions
for tennis, the team played very well," Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said.
"The College of Charleston is always very good and they showed why they are
consistently ranked among the best in the nation today."
Stetson returns to action on Monday when the team takes on
Pennsylvania. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll
Tennis Center.
"This is a stretch of matches that pit us against some excellent
teams," Assistant Coach Christophe Noblet said.
"Penn will also be a formidable challenge, and the team is looking
forward to it."
Match notes: Stetson played in the College of Charleston
Invitational in the fall ... The Hatters lost the last meeting by a score of 5-2
on February 19, 2010 ... Lazarevic was scratched from the singles lineup today.
