GAINESVILLE, Fla. -
The Stetson women's lacrosse team (0-8) went on the road for the first time in
program history, and did so against one of the best teams in the nation. The Hatters lost to No. 2 Florida (12-0) by a
score of 22-1 on Tuesday evening.
"I am pleased with the effort our team put forth against a very highly skilled and experienced team," Stetson head coach Nicole Moore said. "This was a great learning opportunity for us and we will continue to build off the small successes from this game and prepare for Marist."
The undefeated Gators scored 11 seconds into the contest and
never looked back. Florida cruised to a
14-1 lead at halftime, and went on to win by the final score of 22-1. Stetson's lone goal came from freshman
Melanie Fredericks, her third of the season.
Freshman Maylis Broderick assisted Fredericks on the goal, notching her
second helper of the year.
Florida was led by Nora Berry and Hayley Katzenberger, who
each tallied three goals in the victory.
Decon Schneider led the Gators with five ground balls, while Sam
Darcangelo totaled six draw controls in the game.
Freshman Caili Guilday, the Atlantic Sun Conference
Defensive Player of the Week, led the Hatters with three ground balls and stopped
nine shots while in goal for 40 minutes.
Sophomore Samantha Akl managed to gather two draw controls for Stetson
in the defeat.
"Despite the score, our defense came up with some good stops and they are starting to work as a unity," Moore said. "Our day will come, things are coming together for this team, and we are experiencing success as individuals and as a program."
Stetson will next return home to host Marist on Thursday,
March 21. The Hatters and the Red Foxes
are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Athletic Training Center.
