Winthrop Hands Hatters Loss at Mercer Classic

MACON, Ga. – A still undefeated Winthrop Eagles (4-0-1) scored early and often to defeat the Stetson men's soccer team (1-3-1) by a score of 5-2 on the final day of the Mercer Classic on Sunday afternoon in Macon.

Even though the result wasn't what the Hatters were looking for, Stetson head coach T. Logan Fleck took away some positives.

“Our effort as a team today was better than in Friday's game,” Fleck said. “We just have to eliminate the sloppy soft goals we have giving up in the first half of matches. We also need to put some of our good chances at goal in the net.

“By his play in today's game, Stevie Saballos put forth a great example of how to play a full 90 minutes,” Fleck went on to say. “We will work over the next couple of weeks at training on bringing out our mental toughness, focus, and match maturity to keep improving with this tough schedule.”

Wintrhop scored two goals in the first seven minutes of action to take an early lead over Stetson. Magnus Thorsson tallied his first of the year, while Max Hasenstab picked up his second to give the Eagles the advantage.

The Hatters countered quickly though, making it 2-1 in the 14th minute. Senior JJ Bostic headed a shot past Guilherme Avelar off of a perfectly placed corner kick from senior Raffaele Centofanti for his first score of the season.

An unassisted score by the Eagles late in the first made it 3-1, and Winthrop extended its lead to 5-1 in the second on goals by Josh Choice and Sean Comer.

Junior Dwight Lodge scored with under a minute to play to make the final score 5-2. The outside midfielder one-timed a long cross from freshman Justin Shirah for his first goal of the season.

Stetson, now 1-3-1 on the season, will next play at UCF on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

UPDATE: Steven Saballos and JJ Bostic earned All-Tournament Team honors following the weekend.
