FORT MYERS, Fla.—Tabby Tindell scored the game-winning goal with less than a minute remaining in the first overtime period as Florida Gulf Coast escaped with a 1-0 win over Stetson in the Atlantic Sun Conference finale for both teams on Saturday.
The Hatters conclude the 2014 season with a 5-12-1 overall record and a 2-5-0 conference mark. FGCU, winners of 11 straight matches, moves on as the top seed in the A-Sun Tournament, which begins next weekend.
“We played our hearts out tonight,” said head coach Manoj Khettry. “We performed in a way that we can build on this in terms of our confidence and development. We were shorthanded and we competed really well, especially with such a young team.”
After a scoreless 90 minutes in which the Stetson defense withstood a potent FGCU offensive effort, the Hatters appeared to be on the verge of forcing a second overtime period before Tindell struck. Her winning goal came with just 47 seconds left in the first extra period. Shannen Wacker had the assists as Tindell scored on a one-timer in the box.
Tindell's goal spoiled a tremendous effort by Stetson keeper Eduarda Pavao, who faced a total of 25 shots and made eight save sin just her third career start.
“Duda was fantastic in goal tonight,” said Khettry. “She made three or four spectacular saves.”
The Hatters managed just one shot for the game.
Saturday's game marked the end of the careers of seniors Carmen Bernecker and Alexis Trybinski.
