Dry Spell Costly in Loss at UCF

ORLANDO, Fla.—Stetson held UCF to 36 percent shooting for the game but the Hatters went the last 6:15 without scoring as the Knights eked out a 64-55 win, Sunday at CFE Arena.

Stetson (1-1) was the aggressor throughout much of the second half, and took a 55-53 lead on a fast-break three-pointer by Angel Rivera with 6:17 to play. But the Hatters missed their final eight shots from the field while the Knights (1-0) closed on an 11-0 run.

The Hatters trailed 34-28 at halftime but came out strong to start the final 20 minutes. Consecutive layups by Kentwan Smith and Brian Pegg pulled Stetson to within 34-32, but UCF responded with four straight points of its own to push the lead back to six, 38-32.

But Stetson punched right back, getting a layup from Pegg, a three-pointer by Cameron Harvey and a  layup from Kyle Sikora to take its first lead of the half at 39-38 with 14:40 to go.

The teams traded one-point leads six times over the next 5:42 before Smith's dunk in traffic gave Stetson a 50-48 lead with 9:08 left. But again UCF responded as Adonys Henriquez nailed a three-pointer to give UCF a 51-50 advantage.

Stetson didn't regain the lead until Rivera's trey, but that was the last basket for the Hatters.

The Hatters placed two players in double figures, as Pegg scored 12 and Rivera finished with 10. Sikora grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and chipped in seven points.

Stetson shot just 35.6 percent for the game, but was converting at a 42 percent clip before the final dry spell. Stetson was just 10-of-15 at the free throw line, while the Knights went 20-of-27.

The Hatters held their own on the boards as the longer, bigger and more athletic Knights finished with just a 42-36 advantage. Stetson took care of the ball, committing just eight turnovers.

It's a quick turnaround for the Hatters as they host Florida International, 7 p.m., Tuesday, at Edmunds Center.
