CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—Stetson rowing worked through the challenges of chilly temperatures and severe wind and turned in a pair of strong performances on the final day of the Head of the Hooch, which was contested this weekend on the Chattahoochee River.
After all rowing events were cancelled on Saturday due primarily to strong winds, teams were permitted to race on Sunday. Stetson had two races entered for the final day, with Andrew Rouse competing in the Men's Open Lightweight 1x. Rouse also joined David Nutting for the Men's Open 2.
“The guys turned in a very strong row today,” said Stetson head coach Mark Wilson. “I'm pleased with both teams and their performances this weekend. Wind was a factor for everyone that rowed today. I've raced myself here eight or nine times and never seen it this rough. All the boats came back with water in them.”
Competing in an event open to all rowers, Rouse finished sixth overall and third among collegiate rowers, despite the rough waters.
Rouse and Nutting finished fourth overall in the Men's Open 2. The duo was the number two collegiate squad in the race, finishing just behind North Carolina.
Stetson closes out its 2014 fall schedule next weekend when the Hatters host Stetson Fall Rowing Rendezvous, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-9, on Lake Beresford.
