Women's Tennis Wins Sixth Straight With Sweep of Oakland

The Stetson women's tennis team won its sixth straight match on Thursday, sweeping visiting Oakland 7-0 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatters improved to 6-1 on the season with the victory.

"It was another great team performance from our squad today," Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said. "Having a few starters under the weather gave others the opportunity to shine."

"Oakland is a tenacious team. They didn't give us any points," Pilote continued. "They fight hard and are well coached."

The Hatters opened things up by winning all three doubles matches and earning the first point. Senior Lindsey Cable and sophomore Eveline Lepinay won 8-1 at number three, sophomore Andrea Crespo and senior MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell earned an 8-3 victory at number two, and senior Diana Bukajeva and freshman Isabella Fernandez won 8-4 at number one to sweep the doubles.

Stetson continued its strong play in singles action. Bukajeva made quick work of her opponent at the number one position, winning 6-1, 6-0. Lepinaey was right behind her, winning 6-1, 6-0 at number five, and Stauffer-MacDowell won 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 at number three to clinch the match for the Hatters.

Crespo added to the win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the number two position, while freshman Carolina Meregalli won 6-3, 6-1 at number four to make it 6-0 in favor of the Hatters.

Freshman Brittany Hill closed out the day with a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) come from behind win at number six singles. It marked her first career dual victory.

"It was so nice to see Brittany win her first collegiate dual match," Pilote said. "She is such a hard worker each day in practice. Her smile after the win was priceless."

Stetson will continue the season on Saturday, hitting the road to take on the College of Charleston.

"Now we turn our attention to #62 College of Charleston," Pilote concluded. "They are consistently ranked among the best in the nation, and I know our team is looking forward to the challenge."
