Women's Basketball Rolls to Fourth Straight Win

DeLand, Fla. -- A win is a win, and the Hatters have now strung together four victories in a row, but the team sure felt much better about Saturday's second-half effort than they did after Thursday night's contest.

Brianti Saunders led four players in double figures with 16 points as Stetson cruised to a 67-44 win over USC Upstate Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

After surrendering 48 second-half points to Kennesaw State on Thursday, Stetson (15-4, 4-1 Atlantic) held USC Upstate (9-11, 1-4) to just 21 second-half points and never allowed the Spartans to make a run after halftime.

"Overall, I thought we played a really good game on both ends of the floor," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "It is a good bounce back from our last game. I wasn't real happy with our effort in the second half (against Kennesaw State)."

On Thursday, the Owls cut a 14-point Stetson lead down to seven on two different occasions. On Saturday, the Spartans were never able to put a dent into Stetson's 16-point halftime lead.

"We were more active on defense," Saunders said. "Coach told us we kind of slacked off in the last 20 minutes (vs. Kennesaw) because we got content, so this game we were picking it up and not slacking."

Saunders led the offensive charge once again, finishing with 16 points including the 700th point of her career. C.J. Coddington and Myeisha Hall each contributed 12 points, while Jama Sharp added 11 points.

Stetson was especially strong on the glass, pulling down a season-high 57 rebounds. Seven different players tallied five rebounds or better, including Coddington who grabbed a team-best nine boards.  Overall, the Hatters had 42 defensive rebounds.

"I am not sure if we have ever rebounded Upstate by this much," Bria said. "They are a good rebounding team. We are just getting more committed. Rebounding is a measure of effort, so I think our effort was outstanding. It was great to see everybody take the responsibility, especially on the defensive end, to get rebounds."

Seven different players also picked up assists as the Hatters collected 16 helpers on 23 made field goals.

"I thought we shared the ball really well," Bria said.  "Gosh, we passed up some good shots to make it one more, and passed it to a teammate for a really good shot."

Stetson broke open a 14-14 tie in the first half with back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers by Saunders, DeAsia Beal, and Hall. The Hatters hit six 3-pointers in the first half and led 39-23 at the break.

"I thought C.J. had another outstanding game," Bria said. "She has had two back-to-back games just playing at a very high level. DeAsia did some really good things defensively for us. She made the extra pass, hit a couple open shots, and I was very, very pleased with her coming off the bench."

The win also allowed Stetson to extend its home court winning streak to 10.  The Hatters are a perfect 9-0 at home this season.

Stetson will hit the road next week for a pair of games at Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb.  The Hatters will next appear at home on Feb. 7 vs. Florida Gulf Coast.

Notes: USC Upstate shot just 25.4% (17-for-67) and finished 22 points below their season scoring average ... Amber Porter moved into 11th place on the Atlantic Sun career blocks list (173) ... Myeisha Hall scored in double figures for the seventh straight game ... The Hatters committed just nine turnovers and allowed only two points off turnovers.
