Women's Basketball Signs Abigail Asoro

DeLand, Fla. -- Former Daytona State standout and two-time JUCO All-American Abigail Asoro has signed a Grant-in-Aid offer with Stetson University, head coach Lynn Bria announced on Thursday. Asoro is transferring from West Virginia University and has enrolled at Stetson for the spring semester.

A 5-10 forward, Asoro earned honorable mention NJCAA All-America honors with Daytona State in 2012-13. She ranked second in the nation in scoring, averaging 23.4 points and 10.1 rebounds per game for the Falcons.

In 2013-14, Asoro was selected for the WBCA Coaches' All-America Team as a member of Iowa Western. She averaged 18.6 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, helping lead the Reivers to a 25-7 record and a Region XI Championship.

A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Asoro earned MVP honors for the U-18 Swedish National Team. In 2011, she helped Sweden capture the Nordic Championship and was named to the All-Star Team. She also competed in the 2011 European Championship, in which Sweden finished runner-up. In 2009, Asoro was part of the U-16 Swedish National Team that competed in the U-16 Olympic Games. She also participated in the Baltic Sea Cup three straight years.

“Abigail is a super-athletic and highly talented player," Bria said. "Her track record in junior college and international play speaks for itself. She runs the floor like a deer and is highly skilled around the basket. She rebounds the ball at an extremely high level and can score from all over the floor, including in transition. She put up unbelievable numbers scoring and rebounding in junior college and we see her coming here and making an immediate impact on our team.“

Asoro signed with West Virginia University of the Big 12 in the fall of 2013, but did not compete with the Mountaineers this season. She will have two seasons of eligibility remaining when she becomes eligible for the 2015-16 season.

Asoro was rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 3 Junior College player in the country for the class of 2014 by Peach State Basketball.

Stetson (11-3) will open Atlantic Sun Conference play at Florida Gulf Coast at 4 p.m. Saturday.
