DeLand, Fla. -- Madison Akins approached a triple-double with 16 kills, nine digs, and eight blocks as Stetson defeated Kennesaw State 3-1 (28-26, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21) to complete an Atlantic Sun Conference weekend sweep at the Edmunds Center.
Haley Tippett added 15 kills and 20 digs for the Hatters (7-11, 2-3 A-Sun), who climbed into fifth place in the league standings.
The Owls dropped to 10-6, 2-3.
"I was pleased with how aggressive we were offensively and on the block," Stetson head coach Kristina Hernandez said. "I felt like we made some really good adjustments to what they were doing to us at some particular moments, but overall, I was very pleased with everyone's effort today."
The Hatters led 2-0 at the intermission, but the Owls took set 3 and held a 16-13 advantage in set 4. Stetson answered to tie the game, then later finished the set on a 9-3 run, capped off by a game-winning kill from Akins.
"I felt our blocking really got us back in that fourth set," Hernandez said. "We got some really good touches. And then Maddie Akins, McKenna (Foster) and Haley were putting some good swings on the other side."
Madison Fitzsimmons registered 10 kills and seven blocks, including two of the solo variety, while McKenna Foster collected 10 kills, six digs, and three aces. Kayla Weller dished out 51 assists, giving her an even 100 for the weekend, while Michelle Kastner picked up 16 digs and Shelby Connors added four blocks.
The Hatters hit .229 for the match, recorded 12 blocks and served eight aces.
Stetson entered the weekend hoping to gain some confidence and make up some ground in the standings. After a earning pair of well-played, four-set victories, mission accomplished.
"I felt like we were a totally different team, even from what we did last weekend," Hernandez said. "You can tell we are playing with more confidence now. This will help going into the next weekend with JU and UNF."
The Hatters will visit Jacksonville at 7 p.m. Friday and UNF at 5 p.m. Saturday.
