Hatters Stymied at Tennessee State, 74-54

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Stetson endured its worst offensive performance of the season in a 74-54 loss at Tennessee State on Saturday.

The Hatters (3-6) shot just 34 percent for the game. The 54 points represent a season-low for a Stetson team which entered the game 47th nationally in scoring at 82.9 points per game.

Tennessee State's defense smothered Stetson in the first half, limiting the Hatters to a season-low 18 points. The Hatters were just 7-of-24 from the field in the first 20 minutes and missed all of their six three-point attempts.

Stetson showed signs of life offensively to start the second half, as Derick Newton and Divine Myles combined to score the Hatters' first seven points to get within 33-25. But the Tigers responded with a 19-0 run to regain control of the game at 52-25, and the Hatters never seriously threatened again.

Newton led all scorers with 20 points, going 4-of-7 from the field and 11-of-13 from three free throw line. Myles added 15 points.

Stetson made just one of its 12 three-point attempts. The Hatters were 21-of-26 from the free throw line.

Wayne Martin led the Tigers (5-2) with 20 points, while Keron DeShields had 19.

Stetson is off next week for final exams. The Hatters return to action when they welcome Tennessee Stat to the Edmunds Center, 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 14.
