ATLANTA, Ga.—Stetson men's tennis dropped a 6-1 decision on Saturday at Georgia Tech.
Senior co-captain Chester Espie was the only Hatter to come out on the positive side of the scoreboard against the Yellowjackets (6-2), defeating Daniel Yun 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5 singles. But despite the fact Stetson (4-5) only won once, the Hatters were able to keep several matches close against a strong ACC foe, including a pair of three set losses.
Georgia Tech swept the Hatters in doubles play, winning matches at No. 1 and No. 2. The Yellowjackets then won the first two singles matches, getting positive results at No. 4 and No. 3 to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Tech clinched the match with a win at No. 6 before the Hatters got on the board with Espie's win at No. 5.
Laurynas Antropikas put up a strong fight at No. 1 singles, taking ITA No. 57 Christopher Eubanks to the limit before suffering a 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 defeat.
Tech closed the match when Cole Fiegel downed Loic Blanco 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 2.
"Georgia Tech was the better team today, but we fought them until the end,” said Associate Head Coach Christophe Noblet. “Larry and Loic demonstrated great tenacity after losing that first set, and kept on battling through."
The Hatters are off until Tuesday when they visit UAB,1 p.m., Tuesday, in Brimimgham, Ala.
