Charleston, S.C. -- The No. 9 Stetson sand volleyball team grabbed a pair of wins Saturday in the first day of the College of Charleston Sand Classic at the Creekside sand volleyball facility.
The Hatters (13-1) defeated Carson-Newman 5-0 in the morning and Tulane 3-2 in the afternoon to extend their winning streak to 11.
"Overall, it was a great performance today for the whole team," Stetson head coach Kristina Hernandez said. "I am really, really enjoying watching us in high pressure situations. We stay calm and just go point-for-point because that's just sometimes how it is going to be. Even from the beginning of season until now, we've improved, and if we can stay that focused, then we can continue to play the game and compete.”
Stetson swept all five matches against Carson-Newman (0-8), including a 21-10, 21-12 victory by Claudia Kalin and Madison Tormey at the No. 5 seed.
The Tulane match proved to be much tighter, as the two teams split the opening matches at the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds.
The Hatters then took a 2-1 lead in the contest when Kristin Lind and Maren Rygh claimed a 21-13, 21-8 victory at the No. 2 seed.
At the No. 1 position, Kaley Melville and Julie Bassett clinched the match with a 21-16, 21-18 win.
The Green Wave (10-7) picked up the final point with a three-set win at the No. 3 seed.
Stetson will put its winning streak on the line Sunday when it faces No. 7 Georgia State at 11 a.m. and the College of Charleston at 12:30 p.m.
