Sand Volleyball Sweeps UNF to Open A-Sun Tourney

Estero, Fla. -- Top-seeded Stetson began its quest for a second straight Atlantic Sun Conference title with a dominating 5-0 victory over fourth-seeded UNF Friday afternoon at Estero Community Park.

The Hatters (19-3) advance to play third-seeded Mercer at 9 a.m. Saturday in the winner's bracket semifinal.

Saturday's championship match will be played at 3 p.m.

"I am very proud of everybody," Stetson head coach Kristina Hernandez said.  "I felt like we worked hard for every single point, we didn't give away anything easy, and I think all around as a team we were really aggressive."

The Hatters won in straight sets at all five seeds, including a 21-7, 21-7 victory by Savannah Byl and Holly Reschke at the No. 3 seed.

"To be able to close each match out in two sets really shows just how much importance everybody is putting into what we're doing right now," Hernandez said.  "It's nice to start the tournament like this. Hopefully, it will set the tone for the rest of the weekend and give us some extra confidence as we go on."

At the No. 1 seed, Julie Bassett and Kaley Melville extended their win streak to 19 with a 21-14, 21-9 victory over the Ospreys' top pair of Cari Whitmire and Cameron McGuire.  At No. 2, Kristin Lind and Maren Rygh were victorious over Tessa Alyman and Tanner Garbutt, 21-15, 21-18.

Stetson also received 2-0 victories from Madison Akins and Kaylee Anderson at the No. 4 seed and from Claudia Kalin and Madison Tormey at the No. 5 seed.

UNF (10-11) will face FGCU in the loser's bracket at 11 a.m.

Notes: Stetson defeated Mercer 4-1 and 3-2 at home in the regular season ... The Hatters' 19 dual match wins sets a new single-season record.
