Titusville, Fla. -- The Stetson men's cross country team finished first overall out of five collegiate teams and the women placed second out of seven collegiate teams Friday afternoon at the FLRunners.com Invitational at Chain Of Lakes Park.

"Today, all-in-all, it was a great day," Stetson head coach Joe Matuszczak said. "Last year, we got stormed out. It was super swampy and muddy.  So the conditions out there, although a little bit breezy, were ready for people to have good times.

"We had a good training week, again. This isn't our goal race by any means. The guys won, which was awesome. The women lost to UCF, but UCF is a great team. All-in-all, we have the right pieces headed in the right direction."

The men ran a 5K event and finished with 39 points, well ahead of runner-up Ave Maria (57 points).  Bethune-Cookman was the only other Division I competitor and the Wildcats placed third (82 points).

Joe Berry led the Hatter men and placed third among all individuals with a time of 16:44.1. Also for Stetson, Andrew Townes placed eighth with a time of 17:21.3, Brendan Hessler placed 10th with a time of 17:42.3, Matthew Babikow placed 12th with a time of 17:48.2, Ricky Cupoli placed 16th with a time of 18:07.0, Ryan Hodgins placed 18th with a time of 18:15.7, Austyn Finnk placed 23rd with a time of 18:28.2, Nick Nweeia placed 26th with a time of 18:46.80, and Ryan Newfrock placed 27th with a time of 18:48.3.

The women also ran a 5K and finished with 39 points, finishing behind UCF but ahead of Bethune-Cookman among Division I opponents.  Individually, the Hatters had six runners place in the top 12, with five finishing below the 20-minute mark.

Adrienne DeVita led the Hatter women and placed fifth overall with a time of 19:19.5. Also for Stetson, Clarissa Consol placed sixth with a time of 19:31.8, Rachel Dumas placed eighth with a time of 19:40.0, Rachel Frankenberger placed ninth with a time of 19:41.4, Jessica Cosgrove placed 11th witrh a time of 19:58.7, Brianne Boldrin placed 12th with a time of 20:03.0, Laurie Scott placed 18th with a time of 20:25.9, Catherine Hessler placed 23rd with a time of 20:51.4, Malina Morales placed 25th with a time of 20:54.3, Daniella Godenzi placed 35th with a time of 21:42.8, Trixi Menge placed 37th with a time of 21:51.6, and Maya Sherman placed 52nd with a time of 23:14.10.

The Hatters will return to action next Friday at the FSU Invitational in Tallahassee.
