Ospreys Outlast Hatters 3-1 in Seesaw Affair

Madison Akins, Karmen Reivik Post Double-Doubles

DeLand, Fla. – Despite playing shorthanded due to injury and illness, Stetson battled UNF for four sets before falling 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 25-21) in an ASUN Conference match Friday evening at the Edmunds Center.

The tightly contested match featured 34 ties and 15 lead changes.

"We obviously have had a tough week in terms of injuries and people being out, but I think we competed really well," head coach Kristina Hernandez said.  "I think it is the first time in a match we were genuinely trading points back-and-forth.  There were no huge dips.  I think in the second part of the fourth set, UNF was more aggressive and made better plays than we did, and I think that was the difference."

Madison Akins led the Hatters  (4-17, 1-5 ASUN)  and recorded her second double-double of the season with 15 kills and 16 digs, leaving her just two kills shy of the 1000-mark for her career.  Karmen Reivik also recorded a double-double, the first of her career, with 33 assists and 10 digs.

Julie Varga, playing middle blocker for the first time in her career, tallied five kills, three digs, and three aces.

Shelby Connors posted one solo block and four assists, all of which were alongside Akins.  Connors, Akins and McKenna Foster all assisted on a triple block during the fourth set.  Foster also notched seven kills and 11 digs.

The Ospreys (14-8, 4-2) were led by Gabby O'Connell with 14 kills.

Stetson hit .149 for the match and registered nine aces.

"I felt like we played really well," Hernandez said.  "Our serving was really aggressive. I am hoping we can keep that going tomorrow so that we can get a split for the weekend."

Stetson will continue its three-game homestand on Saturday against Jacksonville.  First serve at the Edmunds Center is scheduled for 5 p.m.
