Hatters Drop Five-Set Heartbreaker Despite Late Rally

JU takes the fifth set in extra points

Jacksonville, Fla. -- Stetson staved off six match points in the decisive fifth set but never could gain the lead before Jacksonville completed a 3-2 (15-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17, 20-18) victory Friday night at Swisher Gym.

The Hatters (4-20, 1-8 ASUN) survived a 14-12 deficit in the final frame with kills from Shelby Connors and Madison Akins, then continued to push the set deeper into extra points with a kill from McKenna Foster and two more from Connors.

However, with the score tied at 18, the Dolphins (7-15, 3-6) tallied the final two points to close out the marathon match, which featured 31 ties, 14 lead changes, and numerous comebacks from both sides.

Stetson hit .239 as a team, posting 57 kills on the night.

Foster led the Hatters with 19 kills, including the 700th kill of her career.  She hit .340 for the match, committing just three errors on 47 attempts.  She also picked up 20 digs, marking her fourth double-double of the year.

Charlotte Earnhart had a career-best 13 kills, along with eight digs and two aces during a second set rally.  Akins added nine kills, eight digs and three blocks.

Setter Karmen Reivik posted career-highs of 49 assists and 12 digs for her second double-double of the year.  Marissa Salazar led the back row with 21 digs, just one shy of her career-high.  The Hatters had 12 team blocks in the match, including six from Julie Varga (one solo) and five from Connors (two solo).

The last time Stetson played extra points in a fifth set was a 18-16 setback at UNF in 2013.

The Hatters will visit UNF at 5 p.m. Saturday.
