Rivera Leads Hatters to Season-Opening Win, 78-62

DeLAND--Angel Rivera led four players in double figures with 18 points as Stetson opened the 2016-17 season with a 78-62 win over Webber, Friday at Edmunds Center.
 
Rivera was 5 of 7 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers, and made all six of his free throw attempts. He was joined in double figures by Divine Myles (14), Derick Newton (12) and Brian Pegg (11). Newton led the Hatters with seven rebounds. Myles had five assists.
 
The Hatters limited Webber to just 32.8 percent shooting from the field, but were out-rebounded by a 40-35 margin. Stetson shot 47 percent for the game, but managed just 4 of 20 from beyond the arc.
 
Stetson closed the game on a 23-11 run after Webber closed to within 55-51 with 7:43 remaining. The Hatters led 36-26 at halftime.
 
Cody Carden and Daniel Coffey led the Warriors with 14 points each.

Rivera's 18 points are his most since scoring 21 against Tennessee State on Dec. 14, 2015 … Stetson is now 15-0 when opening the season at Edmunds Center, a streak which dates back to the first game in the building's history on Dec. 5, 1974 (Stetson 73, Marshall 58) … the Hatters made four 3-pointers against Webber, extending Stetson's streak of games with at least one trey to 361 … Brian Pegg's moved within 51 points of reaching 1,000 for his career … the game featured a combined total of 50 fouls and 58 free throws … juniors Larry Dennis and Matthew Cioce, and freshman Clay Verk made their Stetson debuts.
