Hatters Fall in Track Meet with Citadel, 116-112

DeLAND—Citadel's Matt Frierson hit a back-breaking three-pointer with 51 seconds left and the Bulldogs went 8 for 8 from the free throw line in the final 32 seconds in holding off Stetson in a wild 116-112 victory on Friday at Edmunds Center.

Stetson (2-1) trailed 99-87 with 4:57 to play but went on a 17-6 run over the next 3:35 to get within 105-104 on a Luke Doyle 3-pointer with 1:22 left.

Frierson, with the shot clock running down and Doyle nearly chest-to-chest, knocked down a triple from the top of the key for a 108-104 lead. Stetson immediately turned it over on their ensuing possession and Citadel's walk to free throw line gave them the win.

The Hatters struggled defensively in the first half, allowing Citadel to shoot 55 percent from the field on their way to a 59-59 halftime lead. But Stetson regrouped in the second half, shooting nearly 58 percent and holding the Bulldogs to just 41 percent from the field, but the halftime deficit proved to be too much.

Derick Newton led Stetson with 23 points, despite playing just six minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. The sophomore forward was 7 of 11 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers, and made 7 of 9 free throw attempts. He added nine rebounds.

Divine Myles scored 21, his second straight 20-plus point performance. Rivera had 17 with seven assists, and Larry Dennis scored 14 and grabbed seven rebounds in his first start of the year. Doyle finished with 13 points and B.J., Glasford added 12.

Kaelon Harris led Citadel with 26 points.

Quotable
"The defense, which we've spent so much time on, was non-existent at times. We couldn't stop anyone. They were able to get to the basket or they made uncontested threes. If you look at the first half, they made some big shots. That's what got them a 10-point lead." – Stetson head coach Corey Williams.
