Foul-plagued Hatters Fall at Air Force, 85-72

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Derick Newton and Divine Myles combined to score 42 points but Stetson couldn't overcome severe foul trouble as the Hatters suffered an 85-72 loss to Air Force in the Savannah Invitational, Tuesday at Clune Arena.

Newton sank a career-high six 3-pointers on his way to 22 points, and Myles finished with 20 on 7 of 13 shooting, adding five assists.

Four Hatters (2-3) finished the game with four fouls, including Larry Dennis, who fouled out for the second time in as many games. Air Force (5-0) took full advantage of Stetson's foul woes, opening the second half with a 13-0 free throw attempt advantage as they doubled their 38-33 halftime lead to 53-43 after a pair of free throws by Jacob Van with 13:29 to play.

Once the Hatters got to the line in the second half, they couldn't take advantage. Stetson was 4 of 9 from the stripe in the second half, compared to 13 of 21 for the Falcons.

Despite that Stetson never let the Falcons get away. The Hatters whittled the deficit to 70-66 on a Newton three with 4:35 to play but they never got closer than five the rest of the way.

Two days after making just 3 of 31 three-pointers, the Hatters finished Tuesday's game 12 of 29 from three-point range.

Frank Toohey led Air Force with 22 points.

Quotable
"We had too many fouls. The difference in the game was at the free throw line. Our guys fought and they played hard. I'm disappointed and frustrated but I'm really proud of the effort we gave.  " – head coach Corey Williams
