Clermont, Fla. – Stetson pitchers ran their season-opening streak of scoreless innings to 20 1/3 on Saturday, but when the streak ended, so did the Hatters' 3-0 start.
After blanking Morgan State 3-0 in Saturday's first game, the Hatters surrendered three first inning runs to Liberty in game two before falling to the Flames 8-0 in the Dot Richardson Invitational at the National Training Center.
Stetson (3-1) will close out its opening weekend of play on Sunday at Patricia Wilson Field when the Hatters host Fordham (1-3) in a single game. The first pitch is slated for noon.
Stetson 3, Morgan State 0
The Hatters scored all the runs they needed in support of freshman pitcher Brooke Hutto in the first inning when Ashley Smith scored from third on a double steal after MSU shortstop Amber Arlinghaus dropped a fly ball to keep the inning alive and then misplayed the throw on the double-steal.
Stetson added a run in the third when Kayla Drury doubled to right, scoring Brittany Hawn from second.
The Hatters scored their final run in the sixth on consecutive hits by Jessica Griffin, Morgan Hatch and Molly Shashteen, with Shasteen's double down the line in left scoring the run.
That was plenty of support for Hutto, who surrendered just three hits and one walk while striking out three for her second win of the season.
Stetson collected six hits off Morgan State (0-4) starting pitcher Allison Hartman, who fell to 0-2 on the year.
Stetson's three consecutive team shutouts to start the season set a new school record.
Liberty 8, Stetson 0
The Flames (2-4) brought a quick end to the Hatters' scoreless innings streak, scoring three times off starter Chelsea Hostetler in the first inning, and three more in the second.
The Hatters' first batter in the game reached on a Liberty error, but Julia DiMartino (1-1) shut the door from that point on, retiring the next 12 batters in a row while posting four strikeouts. It was the first no-hitter thrown against Stetson since 2010.
Freshman Tori Perkins made her debut in relief, working the final 2.2 innings.
