Hats 7th Seed for A-Sun Tourney; Face NJIT Tuesday

MACON, Ga. - Three of the four Atlantic Sun Men's Basketball contests on Thursday were decided by seven points or less as the 2015-16 regular season came to a close with North Florida claiming the outright title and No. 1 seed for the A-Sun Championship. In its first season in the A-Sun, NJIT locked up the No. 2 spot ahead of No. 3 Jacksonville & No. 4 FGCU.


The Ospreys posted an 81-80 victory at Jacksonville behind 22 points from Dallas Moore, while Chris Davenport & Demarcus Daniels chipped in double-digit scoring efforts to reach 1,000 career points. Jacksonville's Kori Babineaux tallied a game-high 24 points in the loss with J.R. Holder following with 23 as the Dolphins nearly completed the second-half comeback after trailing by 11 at the break. With the win, North Florida becomes the fourth program in A-Sun history to win outright back-to-back A-Sun regular season titles and will face No. 8 USC Upstate on Tuesday, March 1st at 7:30 PM. The Dolphins welcome Lipscomb to Swisher Gymnasium for a 7 PM ET tip on Tuesday in the A-Sun Quarterfinals.

NJIT fell on a buzzer beater for the second-straight meeting against USC Upstate as Malik Moore's last-second triple gave the Spartans the 72-71 victory. Moore finished with 10 points, while Josh Cuthbertson led the squad with 15. The Highlanders secured the No. 2 seed and will host Stetson on Tuesday at 7:30 PM. Damon Lynn finished with 21 points in the loss as the Highlanders battled back from a 20-point deficit and gained the upperhand with seven seconds left on a three from Chris Jenkins. Tim Coleman landed 19 points in the loss as Ky Howard added 12 with five assists.

Stetson produced another stunning upset as the Hatters caught fire late in the first half after trailing by 18 nine minutes into the game. Luke Doyle led the comeback with 18 points on six three-pointers, while Brian Pegg produced 19 with six rebounds and four blocks. Derick Newton tallied 17 points and hit a clutch three with 1:10 left to stretch Stetson's advantage to six. FGCU's Marc-Eddy Norelia tallied a game-high 29 points with 12 rebounds in a dominating effort as the Eagles earned the No. 4 seed in the A-Sun Quarterfinals and will host No. 5 Kennesaw State on Tuesday at 7:05 PM.

Kennesaw State supplied the final decision of the regular season with a 73-57 victory at Lipscomb behind 26 points from Kendrick Ray as the Owls evened their conference record at 7-7 and earned the No. 5 seed in the A-Sun Championship; highest in program history. The Owls outscored the Bisons by 13 in the second half forcing Lipscomb into 20 total turnovers for the game. Garrison Mathews posted 16 points in the loss for Lipscomb, while George Brammeier added 15. KSU heads to Alico Arena to face FGCU, while Lipscomb will face No. 3 Jacksonville.
