Box Score Conway, SC – The Stetson Hatters barely had time to break a sweat Thursday evening at Coastal Carolina before the homestanding Chanticleers put eight runs on the board in the opening game of a three-game series at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Coastal Carolina went on to take an 11-2 victory over the Hatters in front of 1,532 fans.
The teams will meet again on Friday at 2 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for a 6 p.m. start, but has been moved up in an attempt to beat expected evening thunderstorms.
The Hatters (12-11) were their own worst enemies in Coastal Carolina's (14-9) big first inning. After Anthony Marks singled off Stetson starter Mitchell Jordan (2-3) to open the game, he broke for second on a steal attempt. Hatters catcher Austin Hale made a near perfect throw, but the ball went untouched into center field.
With a runner at third and two out, the flood gates opened. Back-to-back singles plated the first run of the day, then Tyler Chadwick blasted a three-run homer. After a walk, Seth Lancaster delivered a two-run bomb. Another error, followed by a walk, allowed Michael Paez to deliver a two-run double, ending the day for Jordan.
After that first inning, the rest of the game was academic.
The Hatters managed to score a pair of runs off CCU starter Bobby Holmes (2-1) in the third, but both runs were unearned due to a Chanticleers error. Coastal got three runs in the fifth thanks to two walks, a single and two more Hatters errors.
In his first start of the year, Holmes worked seven strong innings, allowing just the two unearned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.
Bright spots in the game for Stetson included the work of a trio of left-handers on the mound following Jordan's early departure. Sophomore Ben Onyshko worked 3.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
He was followed by senior Adam Schaly, who blanked the Chanticleers on four hits over 2.1 innings, and sophomore Eliot Shapleigh, who worked the final inning and two thirds, allowing just one hit.
The Hatters managed 10 hits in the game, but only senior John Fussell had more than one. Chadwick had three hits and drove in four runs to lead Coastal, which finished the night with 13 hits.
