Emerson, Ga. -- Stetson's bid for a third straight conference championship fell two points short as UNF claimed a 3-2 victory and the A-Sun title Sunday afternoon at LakePoint Sporting Community.
With the score tied 2-2, the Ospreys took the decisive third set at the 2 seed by a 15-13 margin.
The Hatters (28-7) went 2-1 in the championship, defeating Mercer on Friday and FGCU on Saturday. UNF (24-9) had to battle its way out of the loser's bracket, just as Stetson did in winning its titles in 2014 and 2015.
Vendy Strakova and Sara Putt were named to the Atlantic Sun all-tournament team after going 3-0 at the No. 1 seed. On Sunday, the duo won 21-15, 21-16 to earn Stetson its second point.
The Hatters' first point of the day came at the 5 seed as Jamie Walsh and Alexa Richardson won 21-12, 21-12.
Stetson's 3 seed of Kristin Lind and Tiffany Creamer and the 4 seed of Madison Akins and Rachel Noble each fell 2-0, setting up a winner-take-all match on court 2. There, Kaylee Anderson and Emily Carroll split their first two sets, then battled through nine ties and several lead changes in the third before the Ospreys came away with the victory.
The Hatters will now wait and see if they are selected as one of the eight teams to participate in the first-ever NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship. The selection show will take place on May 1 at 9:30 pm ET on NCAA.com. The NCAA Championship will be held May 6-7 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
The Hatters are currently ranked eighth in the nation in both the AVCA and DiG Magazine collegiate beach polls. Stetson's 28 dual match victories is second in the country to Florida State (29-1). Seven of those wins have come against nationally ranked opponents.
