Pegg's Milestone Helps Lift Hatters Past NJIT

DeLAND—Four players scored in double figures and Brian Pegg reached an important career milestone as Stetson snapped a three-game losing streak with an 82-76 Atlantic Sun Conference win over NJIT, Thursday at Edmunds Center.

Pegg, who has missed 11 games this season due to various injuries, scored 10 points and in the process became the 34th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points.

Derick Newton led the Hatters with 21 points. Divine Myles had 16 and a season-high 8 assists, and Angel Rivera chipped in with 14 points and four assists for Stetson (8-12 overall, 1-3 ASUN).

The Hatters dominated play in the first half and led, 48-35, at halftime. The Hatters shot 51.4 percent over the first 20 minutes and made 8 of 14 from 3-point range.

But foul trouble plagued the Hatters early in the second half, helping the Highlanders (9-11, 1-3) erase Stetson's lead. NJIT eventually wiped out Stetson 13-point advantage and took a 57-56 lead on Anthony Tarke's layup with 11:43 to play. But B.J. Glasford came out of a time out and drained a 3-pointer and converted a layup as Stetson regained the lead, 61-59, with 10:06 to play. The Hatters never trailed again.

But NJIT didn't go away. The Highlanders eventually tied the game with 2:36 left when Abdul Lewis' layup made it 72-72. Stetson, however, closed the game on a 10-4 run and earned their first conference win of the year.

Lewis had a monster game for NJIT, finishing with 20 points and 19 rebounds. Damon Lynn, who entered the contest ranked 13th in the NCAA in scoring at 21.9 points per game, scored 17 but was limited to 4 of 17 shooting.

Quotable
"The guys really played well the first half. We knew NJIT, with Damon Lynn, was going to be a problem. I thought our guys battled. We got a 13-point lead and then all of a sudden it disappeared. I told them after the game I was really proud of them for showing the resolve that they did when the game was all tied and we got behind. They found a way to win that basketball game and I'm awfully proud of those guys." – Stetson head coach Corey Williams
