Big Second Half Helps Hatters Race Past UNF

DeLAND—Stetson scored 56 points and shot better than 74 percent in the second half as the Hatters rallied for an 88-74 win over defending Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season champion North Florida, Saturday at Edmunds Center.

Derick Newton led the Hatters (9-14 overall, 2-5 ASUN) with 26 points, while Divine Myles just missed a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists. Luke Doyle added 16 points – 14 in the second half – and Brian Pegg scored 10.

At one point in the second half Stetson had made 20 of 25 field goals (80 percent). On the other end of the floor, Stetson limited the Ospreys to 28 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes.

Stetson trailed 41-32 at halftime but started the second half by making 6 of their first 7 shots from the field. But that effort only got the Hatters within 52-45 with 16:30 to play.

The Hatters began to take control as the defense clamped down on the Ospreys (9-15, 4-3). After ASUN scoring leader Dallas Moore's jumper with 15:32 to go made it 54-47, the Hatters went on a 13-2 run over the next 3:10, taking a 60-56 lead on a Doyle three-pointer with 12:22 left.

The lead changed hands twice in the next three minutes before the Hatters took control of the game. With UNF up, 63-62, Doyle made a three and Myles converted a three-point play after stealing the ball and getting fouled on a dunk. That flurry gave Stetson a 68-63 lead with 8:38 remaining.

After the Ospreys clawed back to within 69-67, the Hatters scored eight straight points for a 77-67 lead. Stetson pushed the lead to 12 points twice, and Larry Dennis sealed the game when his fast-break dunk made it 85-74 with 1:49 left.

Chris Davenport led UNF with 26 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Moore finished with 13 – 11 below his season average – on 6 of 19 shooting.

Quotable
"I thought we were aggressive and that we really battled (in the second half). We did a good job on Dallas Moore, and all of those things allowed us to win the basketball game. Our guys stepped up. Guys that needed to step up, stepped up." – Stetson head coach Corey Williams
