Late Rally Comes Up Short as Hatters Fall to Jacksonville

Stetson's Divine Myles scored 20 points in the second half but the Hatters' late rally fell just short in an 89-86 setback to Atlantic Sun Conference foe Jacksonville, Monday at Edmunds Center.

Stetson (9-15 overall, 2-6 ASUN) trailed 79-64 with 6:09 to play but Myles, who played most of the game saddled with foul trouble, led Stetson to within a basket at the end. The junior guard scored 15 of Stetson's final 22 points, giving the Hatters a chance at the end.

A Myles three-point play pulled Stetson within 85-82 with 35 seconds left, and back-to-back layups by Myles with less than 20 seconds to play trimmed JU's lead to 88-86. Tanner Rubio made 1 of 2 free throws for the Dolphins for an 89-86 lead with :06 on the clock, giving Stetson a chance to tie. But after a timeout, Derick Newton's three-pointer from the top of the key was just short as the Dolphins escaped with the win.

Jacksonville (15-10, 3-5) took control of the game mid-way through the second half. With the game tied at 55-55 with 11:26 to go, the Dolphins went on a 24-9 run over the next 5:17 to take a 79-64 lead. But the large advantage didn't last long for JU as Myles and the Hatters stormed back to make a game of it down the stretch.

Darien Fernandez led Jacksonville with 27 points, and Marcel White added 21 off the bench.

Myles finished 8 of 12 from the field and scored 22 points for the game. Derick newton led the Hatters with 23 point, his fifth straight game with at least 20. Luke Doyle added 15, and Brian Pegg recorded his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

News & Notes
Pegg now has 24 career double-doubles … he set a school-record with 18 last season but has played in just 13 games this season … Newton has scored 131 points in his last five games and is 14 points shy of 1,000 for his career … Angel Rivera finished with 5 assists and became the fifth player in school history to pass the 400-assist mark … he now has 403 assists.

Quotable
"The encouraging thing is that we did enough to fight back and get back into the game, but any time you're in a game like that you can't allow a team to get such a big lead and all of a sudden you're climbing up a hill trying to come back." – Stetson head coach Corey Williams

Up Next
The Hatters take a break from conference play when they visit Bethune-Cookman, 7 p.m., Wednesday in Daytona Beach, Fla.
