Newton Named ASUN Player of the Week

Stetson's Derick Newton has been named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week in men's basketball, the league office announced on Monday.

Newton, a sophomore forward, helped the Hatters to a 1-1 week by averaging 28.5 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 60 percent (18-30) from the field. He scored 31 points in a loss last Wednesday at Jacksonville, and led the Hatters with 26 points in their win over North Florida on Saturday.

Over his last four games, Newton has scored 108 points, the most by a Hatter in a four-game span since Jason Alexander had 120 during the 1995-96 season. Newton has scored 20 or more in four straight games, including a pair of 30-point efforts.

For the season, Newton leads the Hatters ranks sixth in ASUN in scoring at 17.8 points per game. With 963 career points, Newton needs 37 more to become the third Hatter this season and 35^th in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

The Hatters host Jacksonville tonight at 7 p.m.
