Hatters Fall Just Short in Five-Set Battle With UNF

DeLand, Fla. -- Trailing 2-0 at intermission, Stetson rallied to force a fifth set, staving off one match point in the process, but eventually fell 3-2 (25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 24-26, 15-12) to visiting UNF Friday night at the Edmunds Center.

In a thrilling seesaw match that featured 36 ties and 15 lead changes, a red card issued against Stetson for an illegal rotation late in the fifth set helped secure the win for the Ospreys (8-14, 1-5 ASUN).

The Hatters (3-15, 2-4) were down 24-23 in the fourth set when Julie Varga, entering the match for the first time, tied the score with a kill from the right side.  Eva Deisa and Shelby Connors then combined on a block, and Hao Jin finished the frame with a service ace to force a fifth set.

In the final set, Stetson rallied from an 8-5 deficit at the changeover to take a 9-8 lead.  UNF then gained a 12-10 advantage before the Hatters tied the set at 12-12.  The Ospreys would score the final three points of the match including the 14th point coming as a result of the red card.

Naina Ivanova, Anna Bezhan and Deisa each had double-doubles for the Hatters.  Deisa led the team with 16 kills to go along with 11 digs and and Bezhan added 14 kills and 13 digs.  Ivanova finished the match with 44 assists and 15 digs.  Chelcie Spence led the back row with 22 digs, her third straight 20+ dig match, and Jin recorded five blocks and four aces.

UNF outhit Stetson .247 to .168.

The Hatters will return home Saturday night to face Jacksonville.  First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
