Rivera Ties Mark as Freshmen Lead Hatters to Opening Day Victory

Angel Rivera tied a long-standing Stetson record with 15 assists and Abayomi Iyiola led an impressive debut effort by a cast of freshman as the Hatters downed Webber, 98-89, Friday afternoon at Edmunds Center.

With four seniors plus Iyiola in the starting lineup and a quartet of Hatters nursing a variety of ailments and unable to play, Stetson leaned on a bench made up almost exclusively of freshmen and the newcomers delivered a whopping 62 combined points in the win. In addition to a team-high 21 points from Iyiola, Raine McKeython scored 13 and Kenny Aninye had 12 in their collegiate debuts.

Fellow freshmen Keith Matthews (8), Christiaan Jones (6) and Adam Webb (2) also made offensive contributions in their respective debuts for Stetson.

Rivera, meanwhile, was the benefactor for the young guns. The senior tied a 35-year old record for assists in a game, while moving ever closer to becoming the Hatters' all-time statistical leader in the category.

Senior Luke Doyle had 15 points for Stetson on 3-of-7 shooting from deep.

Stetson trailed, 49-47, at halftime after Webber shot 62 percent in the first 20 minutes. But the Hatters limited the Warriors to 32.5 percent shooting in the second half to pull out the win.

The Hatters shot 50 percent from the field and were 11 of 27 from 3-point range. Stetson out-rebounded Webber, 45-39.

Webber's Jonathan Childs led all scorers with 22 points.
