Hatters Fall Short Against SIUE

Box Score SIU Edwardsville closed the game on an 11-2 run as the Cougars handed Stetson an 80-76 defeat, Saturday at Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (2-2) trailed 43-39 at halftime and were behind for much of the game. Stetson finally gained its first lead when a Divine Myles layup made it 64-63 with 6:53 to play.

The lead twice reached five points, the first time coming on a Luke Doyle 3-pointer to make it 69-64, and the second time coming when a Myles jumper game the Hatters a 74-69 advantage with 3:51 to go.

But Stetson missed its final five shots from the field and was just 2 for 6 from the free throw line down the stretch.

Meanwhile, SIUE's Jalen Henry scored five straight points to help the Cougars (1-2) to a 78-74 lead with 24 seconds left. David McFarland and Daniel Kinchen each made a free throw in the final 11 seconds to help the Cougars to ice the game.

Myles led Stetson with 18 points, but was just 5 of 17 from the field. He added six rebounds and three assists. Angel Rivera scored a season-high 17 points as he went 13 of 15 from the line. Abayopmi Iyiola scored 12 off the bench and Larry Dennis chipped in with 11.

Kinchen led the Cougars with 23 points and Henry scored 20 with 13 rebounds.

Free throws kept the Hatters in the game early while the offense struggled. Stetson was 31 of 42 from the lien for the game, including 17 of 20 in the first half. But the Hatters shot just 34 percent from the field, including a 3-of-18 effort from beyond the arc.

SIUE shot 46 percent from the game and owned a slim 40-39 rebounding edge.

The Hatters host Ave Maria, 7 p.m., Monday.
