Hatters Battle But Fall 3-0 at USC Upstate

Charlotte Earnhart records a career-high 15 kills

Spartanburg, S.C. -- Stetson battled deep into the third set, staving off six match points before USC Upstate completed a 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 34-32) victory over the Hatters in an ASUN Conference match Friday night at the Hodge Center.

Charlotte Earnhart recorded a career-high 15 kills and Anna Bezhan added 12 as the Hatters (3-20, 2-9) hit .196 for the match.  Earnhart and Bezhan combined for five kills during extra points in the marathon third set.  The teams combined for 16 ties and five lead changes in the final frame alone.

Stetson also set a new rally-scoring era record with 81 team digs in three sets.  Chelcie Spence led the way with 21 digs, her sixth match with 20 or more digs this season.  Naina Ivanova picked up 19 digs and Bezhan recorded 18 digs.

Shelby Connors and Hao Jin collected four blocks apiece.  Connors moved past Cristy Hoffman and Miki Ford and into sixth place on the Hatters all-time blocks list.  Connors now has 365 career blocks, while Jin has 95 blocks on the season.

Ivanova (35 assists, 19 digs) and Bezhan (12 kills, 18 digs) each recorded double-doubles for the Hatters.

The third set was Stetson's longest set in over four years. Wyoming defeated Stetson 36-34 in the third set on Aug. 30, 2013.

Montana Swanson had 17 kills to lead USC Upstate (8-17, 4-7).

Stetson will complete a five-game road swing on Sunday afternoon at NJIT.
