Hatters Can't Hold Late Lead, Fall at NJIT

NEWARK, N.J.—NJIT closed the game on a 20-7 run as the Highlanders snatched a 60-56 victory away from Stetson in Atlantic Sun Conference play, Saturday at Fleisher Athletic Center.

Stetson (11-19 overall, 3-10 ASUN) led 49-40 with 7:15 to play after a pair of free throws by Luke Doyle. The Highlanders (10-19, 2-11) responded with an 8-0 run to get within 49-48 on a 3-pointer by Chris Jenkins with 4:59 to go.

Stetson upped its lead to 51-48 on free throws by Derick Newton and Divine Myles but NJIT scored the next four points for a 52-51 lead, its first since the opening moments of the game.

The lead changed hands four more times over the next 90 seconds before the Highlanders took the lead for good, 57-56, on Reilly Walsh's three-pointer with 49 seconds to play. NJIT made three free throws in the final 21 seconds to seal the game.

One game after an outstanding free throw effort helped the Hatters win at USC Upstate, free throws let the Hatters down on Saturday. Stetson was just 8 of 19 from the stripe against NJIT, including 6 of 15 in the second half.

Stetson led, 34-27, at halftime and had a lead as large as 12 points (39-27) early in the second half.

The Hatters shot just 41 percent from the field, but limited NJIT to 33 percent shooting. The Highlanders owned a large rebounding edge, beating the Hatters on the glass by a 46-30 margin.

Newton led all scorers with 17 points. Brian Pegg had 12 and a team-high 7 rebounds, while Luke Doyle added 10 points of his own.

Anthony Tarke led NJIT with 15 points, while adding 10 rebounds.

Quotable
"I thought defensively we did a good job. We held them to 60 points. That's what we wanted to do. We just couldn't score today and we didn't make our free throws like we did on Thursday against Upstate." – Stetson head coach Corey Williams
