Stetson Sweeps Day Two of the Hatter Classic

Hatters Survive Late Rally By LIU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Stetson Hatters scored 10 first-inning runs before recording their first out and cruised to a 16-4 win over Cornell Saturday evening at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters then survived a massive late-inning comeback to defeat LIU Brooklyn 9-8 in the nightcap.

Stetson swept the four games in the Hatter Classic, scoring 45 runs in the process, to improve to 14-3 on the season.

Kelsey Waters and Ashly Smith each hit home runs on the day, and the Hatters tied a school record with three triples against the Blackbirds.

Brooke Hutto improved to 5-0 on the season with a victory in game two.  Chelsea Hostetler earned the save.  Curstin Taylor (2-0) earned the win in relief in the opener.

Against Cornell, Stetson's first 11 batters of the game all reached base safely and all nine starters scored before any outs were recorded.  Smith hit a two-run double, Linda Ross registered an RBI single, Blake Crews ripped a three-run triple, Maggie Fritts tallied an RBI double, and Molly McLaughlin lined a two-run single.  Jessie TenBroeck stole three bases and scored two runs in the frame.

Waters hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second, and the Hatters added five more in the third to cap the scoring.

Against LIU Brooklyn, Ross, Waters, and Vasquez each hit triples, giving Stetson its highest team total since 1992 in a game against Georgia Southern.  Smith also crushed a two-run shot during the Hatters' six-run sixth inning for her fourth home run of the season.

The Blackbirds rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut a 9-1 deficit down to 9-8.  With the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on first, the Hatters turned a line drive into a 4-3 double play to end the threat.

LIU rallied again in the seventh, putting the tying and winning runs in scoring position with two out.  Victoria Zamora's potential game-winning line drive was snatched out of mid air by Smith at first base to preserve the victory.

Stetson will host Providence in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
